FIRST SETTLERS OF WOLF CREEK

It is hard to determine the exact first settlers of the Wolf Creek area, but we have looked at all available sources.  The best source has been the Early Land Records, 1st Surveyors District.

GEORGE SMITH entered 50 acres of land in Smith Co., TN as the assigne of James Vance the assigne of Richard Porterfield.  Entry No.  2113 James Vance Locator.  The land was on a fork of Wolf Creek of the Caney Fork (River) beginning at a beach in the Jackson and Smith Co., TN line where it crosses said fork N15 poles, W92P, S87P, E92P and N72P.  Including said Smiths Improvements whereon he now lives.  Survey 17 Feb 1809 James Rouslton DS.    Survey Chain Carriers Hezekiah Lizenby & Elijah Smith.  Early Tennessee Land Records, Record Group 50, 1st Surveyors District, Tennessee State Library and Archives, Nashville, TN, Roll 26, Survey Books 14-15 page 28.  Entry BK B p 52. This land was on the head waters of Wolf Creek, and very near where the DeKalb/Putnam Co. TN line crosses Highway 141. 

SAMUEL GIBSON per Entry 8772 27 Aug 1812 as assigne John C McLemore & James Vaulz had 10 acres surveyd in Smith Co., TN on Woolf Creek on N Side said creek W56P crossing said creek about 25P S28 1/2P, E56P, N28 1/2P including improvement where said Gibson now lives.  Survey 5 Aug 1814.  James Davis DS SCC George Smith & Abner Smith.  1st Surveyors Dist.  Survey BK H p 116.
